What walk-and-talk therapy is

It's the same psychotherapy you'd get in an office, held outdoors while we walk side by side at a comfortable pace. I'm Chelsea Smith, a Registered Psychotherapist, and I draw on CBT, ACT, EFT and trauma-informed, body-aware approaches, just as I do in indoor sessions.

There's no fitness goal and no set distance. We go at whatever pace suits you, and we can stop and sit whenever you like.

Who it tends to suit

  • You feel restless, tense or boxed in when you sit in a therapy room
  • Eye contact feels intense, and talking shoulder to shoulder feels easier
  • You're dealing with anxiety, stress, burnout or a big life transition
  • Movement and fresh air help you settle your nervous system
  • You want a less formal, more natural setting for therapy

Early research on walk-and-talk therapy is promising, particularly for stress and anxiety, but it's still a developing area and it isn't right for everyone. If you're unsure, we can talk it through in your consultation.

Common questions

Is walk-and-talk therapy confidential?

I protect your privacy as I do in every session, but a public setting has limits an office doesn't. Someone might walk past, and we may be seen together. We choose quieter routes and keep sensitive material for times and places where you feel comfortable, and I'll talk through this with you before we begin.

What if the weather is bad?

We can reschedule, move to my office at 1117 Brock St S in Whitby, or meet virtually. Dress for the weather, and bring water and comfortable shoes.

Do I need to be fit or walk fast?

No. We move at your pace and take breaks as needed. If mobility is a concern, tell me and we'll find a route that works for you.

Which areas do you cover?

I'm based in Whitby and meet clients throughout Durham Region, including Oshawa, Ajax, Pickering and Bowmanville. We'll choose a location that's convenient for you.

Is walk-and-talk right for me if I'm in crisis?

Not as a first step. If you're in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 9-8-8 (Suicide Crisis Helpline, available across Canada) or go to your nearest emergency department.
